Frequently asked questions
What is a ‘unit’ of electricity?
One unit equals one kilowatt-hour (kWh) — a 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour. Your electricity bill charges a rate per unit, which you enter here.
What is a slab (telescopic) tariff?
Most Indian electricity boards charge in slabs: the first block of units is cheap and each higher block costs more. ‘Telescopic’ means every band is billed at its own rate — e.g. ₹4 for the first 100 units, ₹5.50 for the next 100, and so on. Switch to slab mode and set your state’s limits and rates.
Where do I find an appliance’s wattage?
It’s usually printed on the appliance label or in its manual (e.g. 1500 W). For mixed loads, calculate each appliance separately and add the bills up.
Why might my actual bill differ?
Real bills can include fixed charges, taxes, duties and surcharges that vary by state and provider. This tool gives the energy-cost estimate; add those extras for the final figure.
How do I calculate my electricity bill from units consumed?
