Frequently asked questions
What is a nationality (demonym)?
A demonym is the word used to describe a person from a particular country or place — for example someone from India is 'Indian', from France is 'French' and from the Netherlands is 'Dutch'. Forms often ask for your nationality in this form.
What is the nationality of someone from the Netherlands?
Someone from the Netherlands is 'Dutch' (not 'Netherlandish'). Some demonyms don't match the country name obviously — this list gives the correct word for each country.
What is the difference between nationality and country?
The country is the place (like India or Japan), while the nationality is the adjective/noun for its people (Indian, Japanese). When a form asks for nationality, use the demonym rather than the country name.
How do I find a nationality from a country?
Type the country name into the search box and read the nationality column. You can also search the other way — enter a nationality like 'Brazilian' to find its country.
Is this nationalities tool free?
Yes — it's completely free with no sign-up. The list runs in your browser from a built-in dataset, so there are no limits, no API keys and nothing is uploaded.
What is the nationality of someone from India, China or Japan?
Someone from India is 'Indian', from China is 'Chinese' and from Japan is 'Japanese'. Search any country in the list to find the correct demonym, which is what most forms mean when they ask for your nationality.
Why doesn't every nationality match the country name?
Many demonyms are irregular — the Netherlands → Dutch, Switzerland → Swiss, and Denmark → Danish don't follow a simple rule. That's exactly why this list is handy: it gives the correct, accepted word for each country.
