Frequently asked questions
What is a barcode?
A barcode is a machine-readable pattern of parallel bars and spaces that encodes a number or short string. A scanner reads the widths of the bars to recover the value — used on products, parcels, tickets and labels.
Which barcode type should I choose?
Use Code 128 for general-purpose text or numbers, EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail products, ITF-14 for shipping cartons, Code 39 for inventory and asset tags, and Codabar for libraries or blood banks. The hint under the value box tells you what each type accepts.
Why does it say my value isn't valid?
Each symbology only accepts certain characters and lengths — EAN-13 needs 12–13 digits, Code 128 C needs an even number of digits, Codabar needs A–D start/stop letters, and so on. The red hint explains exactly what that type expects.
Do I need to add the check digit?
No. For EAN-8/13, UPC-A and ITF-14 you can enter the value without the final check digit and it's calculated and appended for you. Enter the full value if you already have it.
Which format should I download?
Use PNG or JPEG for screens and documents, and SVG for printing or large labels — SVG is vector, so the bars stay perfectly sharp at any size. Pick a transparent background if you'll place the barcode over a coloured design.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The barcode is generated entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type is sent to, logged or stored on a server.
