Frequently asked questions

When is the next full moon?

See the live countdown at the top of this page — it shows the next full moon's traditional name, exact date and how many days away it is, calculated automatically from today's date.

What is a supermoon?

A supermoon is a full moon that happens to occur near perigee, the closest point in the Moon's slightly oval orbit around Earth. It appears about 14% larger and 30% brighter than a full moon at apogee (its farthest point), sometimes called a micromoon.

How often are there supermoons?

Usually 3 to 4 full supermoons happen each year, though the exact number changes from year to year. They tend to happen a few months in a row, then not again for a while — because the Moon's closest point and its full phase only line up closely for a short stretch at a time.

What are the full moon names for each month?

The traditional Farmers'-Almanac-style names are: January (Wolf Moon), February (Snow Moon), March (Worm Moon), April (Pink Moon), May (Flower Moon), June (Strawberry Moon), July (Buck Moon), August (Sturgeon Moon), September (Harvest Moon), October (Hunter's Moon), November (Beaver Moon) and December (Cold Moon).

What is a Blue Moon?

A Blue Moon is the second full moon to occur within a single calendar month — it doesn't actually look blue. Because a full moon cycle is about 29.5 days, this only happens when a month's first full moon falls in its first couple of days, roughly once every 2-3 years.

Does a full moon affect sleep or mood?

There's no reliable scientific evidence that the full moon affects human sleep, mood or behaviour, despite the folklore. It does have a real, measurable effect on ocean tides, producing higher "spring tides" when combined with the Sun's pull.
