Frequently asked questions
How is a weighted grade calculated?
Multiply each assessment's grade by its weight, add those up, then divide by the total weight. For example 90×0.2 + 80×0.3 + 85×0.5 = 84.5%. The calculator does this automatically as you type.
What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
The tool divides by the total weight you actually entered, so it still gives a correct weighted average of the graded items — effectively your grade so far. Add the remaining assessments to see the full picture.
How do I find what I need on the final exam?
Enter all your known grades and weights, and put the final's weight in but leave its grade blank to see your current standing. Then type different final scores to see how each changes your overall grade.
How are letter grades assigned?
This calculator uses a common US scale (A = 93–96, A− = 90–92, B+ = 87–89, and so on down to F below 60). Your institution's exact cutoffs may differ slightly.
What grade do I need on the final to pass or get an A?
Enter all your known grades and their weights, put the final's weight in and leave its grade blank, then type target overall grades to see the final score you'd need. It's the quickest way to find the mark required to pass or hit an A.
How do I calculate my current grade before the final?
Enter each completed assessment's grade and weight and the calculator gives your weighted average so far — dividing by the weight you've actually entered. That's your standing before the remaining assessments are counted.
