Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is your profit as a percentage of the selling price; markup is the same profit as a percentage of the cost. For example, a ₹50 cost sold at ₹100 is a 50% margin but a 100% markup — same ₹50 profit, two different bases.

How do I price for a target margin?

Switch to “Target Margin”, enter your cost and the margin you want, and the calculator shows the selling price using price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). For instance, a ₹600 cost at a 40% margin needs a ₹1,000 price.

Can the result show a loss?

Yes. In “Cost & Price” mode, if the selling price is below the cost the margin is negative and the result clearly shows a loss.

Is this GST-inclusive?

No — enter pre-tax figures. The calculator works on cost and price directly; use the separate GST Calculator to add or remove tax.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Every figure is calculated in your browser with JavaScript — nothing you enter is uploaded.

How do I calculate profit margin from cost and selling price?

Enter your cost price and selling price in “Cost & Price” mode and this profit margin calculator instantly shows the gross profit, profit margin percentage (profit ÷ price × 100) and markup percentage. For example, a ₹5,000 cost sold at ₹8,000 gives a ₹3,000 profit and a 37.5% margin.

What is a good profit margin for a product or business?

It depends on your industry — retail often runs 5–20% net margins while software and services can be far higher. Use this profit margin calculator to compare your cost, price and target margin so you can price products competitively while staying profitable.
