Frequently asked questions

What countries does this public holiday calendar cover?

Around 100 countries — including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, Brazil and most of Europe — via a live public holiday database, plus a hand-curated calendar for India.

Does it include India's public holidays?

Yes. India's national holidays (Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti), gazetted festival holidays (Holi, Diwali, Eid, Christmas & more) and Restricted Holidays (Raksha Bandhan, Karva Chauth, Onam, Ganesh Chaturthi & more) are curated from official Government of India holiday notifications for the current and surrounding years.

Why are some Indian holidays marked "tentative"?

Islamic-calendar holidays — Id-ul-Fitr, Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid), Muharram and Id-e-Milad — depend on the moon's sighting, so the government itself notifies these dates as provisional until confirmed closer to the date.

What is a "Restricted" holiday, and why isn't Raksha Bandhan a full holiday?

Restricted Holidays are the Government of India's separate, optional list — each Central Government employee may pick any 2 of these dates per year with prior notice, but offices otherwise stay open on them, unlike the compulsory Gazetted/National list. Raksha Bandhan, Karva Chauth, Onam, Ganesh Chaturthi, Chhath Puja and similar festivals sit in this Restricted list rather than the mandatory gazetted one, which is why they're badged separately here instead of appearing as full closed holidays.

How do I check public holidays for a specific year?

Select the country, then pick the year from the year selector (last year, this year, or either of the next two years). The list and next-holiday countdown update instantly.

How is "next holiday" calculated?

It finds the closest upcoming date in the selected country's holiday list, counting from today, and shows a live "in N days" countdown plus a short description of why that holiday is celebrated. It only appears when the selected year includes at least one holiday still ahead.

What does the "Type" badge mean?

For most countries it reflects the official classification — Public, Bank, School, Optional, etc. — as reported by that country's holiday authority. For India, it distinguishes National holidays (fixed by law), Gazetted holidays (the annually notified compulsory festival list) and Restricted holidays (optional — pick any 2 per year, offices stay open), with a dashed purple badge for moon-sighting-dependent "tentative" dates.

Are bank holidays the same as public holidays?

Not always — a public holiday applies broadly (schools, most offices), while a bank holiday specifically closes banks and may differ slightly by country or even by state/region. Check the Type badge, since some countries in this dataset flag both separately.

Is this holiday calendar free to use?

Yes — completely free, no sign-up, no API key and no limits.

Why is a country missing or showing no holidays?

A small number of countries aren't in the underlying public database yet. If a country shows no results, try a neighbouring year, or check back later as coverage is periodically extended.

Can I use this to plan a trip or business schedule around holidays?

Yes — it's built for exactly that. Pick your destination country and year to see every public holiday in advance, so you can plan travel, deliveries, business days or leave requests around them.
