Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between DNS and WHOIS?

DNS records tell you how a domain works right now — where its website and email point, which nameservers it uses and what verification records exist. WHOIS (delivered here via RDAP) tells you about the domain's registration — who the registrar is, when it was created and expires, and its status codes.

Why are some WHOIS fields empty or redacted?

Most registrars hide registrant name, email and address for privacy (GDPR and WHOIS privacy services). We show every field the registry actually publishes — registrar, dates, statuses, nameservers and DNSSEC are almost always available, while personal contact details usually are not.

Why does a record type show 'No records found'?

That simply means the domain has no record of that type. For example, a domain with no email setup won't have MX records, and most apex domains have no CNAME. It's normal, not an error.

Does it need an API key or account?

No. The tool is completely free with no sign-up and no API key — DNS is resolved with public resolvers and WHOIS uses the open RDAP protocol over HTTPS. A light anti-abuse rate limit is the only cap.

Which WHOIS data is available for which domains?

Most gTLDs (.com, .net, .org, .io, .app…) and many ccTLDs publish full RDAP data. A few TLDs don't run a public RDAP endpoint yet — in that case the WHOIS tab will tell you no public data is available.

How do I check if my DNS changes have propagated?

Run a DNS lookup here after making a change — it queries live public resolvers (Cloudflare and Google), so you see the current records. If they still show the old value, propagation isn't complete; it can take from minutes up to the record's TTL (often a few hours) to update everywhere.

What are MX and TXT records used for?

MX records point to the mail servers that receive email for a domain, so they're essential for email delivery. TXT records hold verification and email-authentication values like SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Check both on the DNS tab when setting up or debugging email.
