Frequently asked questions

What is an HSN code?

HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) is an internationally standardised system of code numbers used to classify goods. In India, HSN codes are used under GST to identify a product and determine its tax rate. Codes are 4, 6 or 8 digits — the more digits, the more specific the item.

How many digits should my HSN code be?

It depends on your turnover: businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore must use at least 4-digit HSN codes on B2B invoices, and those above ₹5 crore must use 6 digits. Imports and exports use the full 8-digit code. This tool lists 4-digit HSN codes you can extend as needed.

How do I find the HSN code for a product?

Type the product name (like 'mobile phone', 'rice' or 'footwear') into the search box and read the HSN code and GST rate from the matching row. You can also search by an HSN number to see what item it covers.

What is the difference between HSN and SAC codes?

HSN codes classify goods (products), while SAC (Services Accounting Code) codes classify services. Both are used under GST — use an HSN code when you sell products and a SAC code when you provide services.

Are the GST rates shown here accurate?

The GST rates are indicative and correct to the best of our knowledge, but rates change through GST Council notifications and can depend on the item's value or conditions. Always confirm the current rate on the official GST portal (cbic-gst.gov.in) before filing.

Is this HSN code finder free?

Yes — it's completely free with no sign-up. The list runs in your browser from a built-in dataset, so there are no limits, no API keys and nothing is uploaded.

What is the HSN code for mobile phones, rice or footwear?

As a quick reference, mobile phones fall under HSN 8517, rice under 1006 and footwear under 6401–6405 depending on the type. Search the product name in the list for its HSN code and indicative GST rate, and confirm on the GST portal before filing.

Is the HSN code mandatory on a GST invoice?

Yes, for most businesses. If your turnover is up to ₹5 crore you must show at least a 4-digit HSN on B2B invoices; above ₹5 crore, 6 digits. Exports and imports use the full 8-digit code. This finder gives you the code to put on your invoices.
