Best practices

Same city, three different dialling formats

How you dial a landline depends on where you're calling from, and it trips people up because the leading digits change each time.

Mobile numbers never use an STD code — they're 10 digits everywhere in India, with +91 only added for international dialling.

Frequently asked questions

What is an STD code?

STD stands for Subscriber Trunk Dialling. An STD code is the area code you dial before a landline number to call that city from another city or region within India — for example 011 for Delhi. It always starts with a 0 when dialled domestically.

What is the STD code for Delhi and Mumbai?

Delhi's STD code is 011 and Mumbai's is 022. Other metros include Kolkata (033), Chennai (044), Bengaluru (080) and Hyderabad (040). Search this list for any city to find its code.

How do I use an STD code?

To call a landline in another city, dial the STD code (including the leading 0) followed by the local landline number — for example, 011 then the 8-digit Delhi number. When calling from abroad, replace the leading 0 with +91.

Do I need an STD code to call a mobile number?

No. STD codes are for landline numbers. Indian mobile numbers are 10 digits and dialled directly (or with +91 from abroad) without an area code.

Is this STD code finder free?

Yes — it's completely free with no sign-up. The list runs in your browser from a built-in dataset, so there are no limits, no API keys and nothing is uploaded.

What is the STD code for Bengaluru, Chennai or Hyderabad?

Bengaluru's STD code is 080, Chennai's is 044 and Hyderabad's is 040. Search any city in the list to find its area dialling code, or search a code to find which city it belongs to.

How do I call an Indian landline from abroad?

Dial your international access code, then +91 for India, then the STD code without its leading 0, then the landline number. For example, to reach a Delhi (011) number, dial +91 11 followed by the local number.

Why do some Indian STD codes have 3 digits and others 4?

Bigger cities and metros (Delhi 011, Mumbai 022, Bengaluru 080) were assigned shorter 3-digit codes when India's numbering plan was set up, leaving room for an 8-digit local number. Smaller towns typically get a 4-digit code (like 0141 for Jaipur) paired with a 7-digit local number — the STD code plus the local number always totals the same number of digits nationwide.
