Frequently asked questions

What is a VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every road vehicle, encoding the manufacturer, vehicle attributes (make, model, engine, body style) and a unique serial number.

Where do I find my VIN?

Common locations: the dashboard on the driver's side (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, your vehicle registration and insurance documents, or the title.

Is this VIN decoder free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up, no API key and no limit on how many VINs you decode. It uses NHTSA's public vPIC database.

Does this work for cars outside the US?

NHTSA's database has the deepest coverage for vehicles sold in the US market. Non-US VINs often still decode the World Manufacturer Identifier (make) and basic details, but some fields may come back empty.

Why do some fields show "—" or are missing?

A missing value means NHTSA doesn't have that specific data point for this VIN — it does NOT mean the vehicle lacks that feature or technology.

Can a VIN decoder tell me if a car was in an accident?

No — this tool decodes the manufacturer specification encoded in the VIN (make, model, engine, plant, etc.). Accident and title history require a separate vehicle history report service.

What does the 10th character of a VIN mean?

It encodes the model year. This decoder reads the full VIN and returns the model year directly in the results, so you don't need to decode it manually.

Is my VIN stored anywhere when I decode it?

The VIN is sent directly to NHTSA's public API to look up the specification — nothing is uploaded to or stored on our servers.
