Frequently asked questions
How is HRA exemption calculated?
It’s the lowest of three amounts: the actual HRA you receive, 50% of basic salary for metros (40% otherwise), and the rent you pay minus 10% of basic salary. The smallest of these is exempt; the rest is taxable.
Which cities count as metro?
For HRA, only Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai are treated as metros (50% of basic). Every other city, including Bengaluru and Hyderabad, uses the 40% rate.
Can I claim HRA under the new tax regime?
No. The HRA exemption is only available under the old regime. Under the new regime, HRA is fully taxable.
How do I calculate HRA exemption in India?
This HRA calculator takes the least of three figures under Section 10(13A): the actual HRA received, 50% of basic for metros (40% for non-metros), and rent paid minus 10% of basic. That smallest amount is your tax-exempt HRA.
What documents do I need to claim HRA exemption?
Keep rent receipts and your rent agreement, and if your annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000 you must report your landlord’s PAN to your employer. These support the exempt HRA amount shown by this calculator.
Can I claim HRA if I pay rent to my parents?
Yes — you can claim HRA exemption on rent paid to parents if you genuinely pay them and they own the property, ideally with rent receipts and a bank transfer trail. Your parents must declare that rent as income.
