Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate and divide by 100 — tax = price × rate ÷ 100. Add that to the price to get the total. This sales tax calculator does it instantly: enter the price and rate (or pick a state) in Add tax mode.

How do I calculate sales tax from a total (reverse sales tax)?

Use Extract tax mode. The pre-tax price is total × 100 ÷ (100 + rate), and the tax is the difference between the total and that pre-tax price. This is sometimes called a reverse sales tax calculation.

What is the average sales tax rate in the US?

The population-weighted average combined state and local sales tax rate in the US is a little over 7%, though it varies widely — from 0% in states with no sales tax to over 10% in parts of Louisiana and Tennessee.

Which US states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide general sales tax. Alaska still allows local governments to charge their own sales tax, so combined rates there can vary by city.

Is this the exact sales tax rate for my address?

No — the state rates here are combined estimates (state rate plus the average local rate for that state). Actual rates vary by county and city, so treat this as a quick estimate, not the exact rate for a specific address.

Does this calculator work for VAT or GST?

Yes. Most countries outside the US use a VAT or GST that is usually included in the displayed price. Use Add tax when your price excludes tax, or Extract tax when the price already includes VAT or GST — just type the applicable rate.

Do online sellers have to collect sales tax?

Generally, online sellers must collect sales tax in states where they have economic nexus (a sales or transaction threshold). Rules differ by state, so check your state's tax authority or an automated compliance tool if you sell across state lines.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser with JavaScript — nothing you enter is sent to a server.
