Frequently asked questions

What is TDS?

Tax Deducted at Source is tax the payer withholds while making certain payments (salary, rent, professional fees, interest, etc.) and deposits with the government on the payee’s behalf.

Why does ‘No PAN’ raise the rate to 20%?

Under Section 206AA, if the payee doesn’t provide a valid PAN, TDS must be deducted at the higher of the applicable rate or 20% (sometimes more for specific sections).

Are these rates current?

They reflect commonly applicable rates and thresholds, but the Budget changes them periodically. The rate is editable — confirm the latest figures with the Income Tax Department before deducting.

How do I calculate TDS on a payment?

To calculate TDS, multiply the payment amount by the applicable TDS rate for that section. This free TDS calculator does it for you — pick the nature of payment, enter the amount, and it shows the TDS to deduct and the net payable, factoring in the section’s threshold and PAN status.

What is the TDS rate under Section 194J?

Section 194J covers professional and technical fees, with TDS commonly deducted at 10% (2% for certain technical services) once payments cross the threshold. Select the 194J section above and this TDS calculator auto-fills the rate, which you can edit if your case differs.

How much TDS is deducted if there is no PAN?

If the payee doesn’t supply a valid PAN, Section 206AA requires TDS at the higher of the normal rate or 20%. Switch the PAN status to “No PAN” above and the calculator recomputes the TDS at the 20% minimum automatically.
