How to use Pixel Art Editor
Pick a canvas size
Choose a grid preset (8×8 up to 128×128) or type a custom width and height to start your pixel art or sprite.
Choose a tool and colour
Select the pencil, eraser, fill bucket, line, rectangle, ellipse or select tool, then pick a colour from a palette, your saved swatches, or the colour picker.
Draw on the grid
Click and drag to paint; right-click paints with the secondary colour. Turn on mirror drawing for instantly symmetrical sprites.
Add layers and frames
Use layers to separate outlines from fills, and add animation frames with onion skinning to draw a walk cycle or idle animation.
Preview the animation
Hit Play to preview your frames at any FPS, right inside the editor, before exporting.
Export your art
Download a PNG at any pixel scale, a sprite sheet, or an animated GIF — or save a project file to keep editing later.
Frequently asked questions
Is this pixel art editor free?
Yes — the Pixel Art Editor is completely free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many sprites or animations you create. It runs entirely in your browser.
Can I make animated pixel art / sprite animations?
Yes. Add multiple frames in the Frames panel, set a delay per frame, and use Play to preview the animation at any FPS. Onion skinning shows a ghost of the previous frame so you can line up movement precisely. Export the result as an animated GIF.
Does it support layers?
Yes — each frame can have unlimited layers, each with its own visibility toggle, opacity and stacking order. Layers are great for separating line art from colour fills or shading.
What's the difference between a PNG and a sprite sheet export?
PNG exports just the current frame at your chosen pixel scale. Sprite sheet exports every frame side by side in one image, ready to drop into a game engine like Godot, Unity or Phaser.
Can I import a photo and turn it into pixel art?
Yes — use Import image to downscale any photo onto your current grid size, then clean it up with the pencil, eraser and fill tools. It's a quick way to start a portrait or convert a logo to pixel art.
What is mirror / symmetry drawing?
Turning on horizontal and/or vertical mirror mode makes every stroke you draw automatically repeat as a mirrored copy — ideal for symmetrical characters, icons, mandalas and tile art.
Can I resize my canvas without losing my art?
Yes — the Resize option (as opposed to New canvas) keeps your existing pixels and lets you pick which corner or edge to anchor them to as the canvas grows or shrinks.
What keyboard shortcuts does the editor support?
B or P for pencil, E for eraser, G for fill, I for eyedropper, L for line, R for rectangle, O for ellipse, V for select, [ and ] to change brush size, and Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Shift+Z to undo and redo.
Can I save my project and keep editing later?
Yes — Save project downloads a project JSON file with every layer and frame; Load brings it back exactly as you left it, on any device.
Is my pixel art uploaded anywhere?
No. Every tool, the canvas, the animation preview and all exports (PNG, sprite sheet, GIF) run entirely in your browser with JavaScript — nothing you draw is ever sent to a server.
