Frequently asked questions

What is a word cloud generator?

A word cloud generator (also called a tag cloud maker) turns a block of text into a picture where each word's size reflects how often it appears — the most frequent, most important words show up biggest. It's a quick way to visually summarize an essay, speech, survey, resume or article.

Is this word cloud maker free?

Yes, it's completely free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many word clouds you create. It runs entirely in your browser.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Word counting and the word cloud image are both generated on an HTML canvas in your browser — your text is never sent to a server.

Can I make a heart-shaped or star-shaped word cloud?

Yes — use the Shape control to fit the cloud inside a heart, circle, star, cloud, or your own short text/initials (e.g. a name or year). Words are placed only inside the outline, so the shape reads clearly once it's filled in.

What's the difference between 'Exclude Common Words' and 'Include All Words'?

They're two different cloud styles, not just a filter. Exclude Common Words is the classic word cloud: common English words (the, and, of, is, a, to…) are dropped, and every remaining word appears once, sized by how often it occurs. Include All Words turns filtering off and shows every word from your text exactly as many times as it appears — including common words and repeats — instead of collapsing repeats into one bigger word.

Can I control which words appear or how big they get?

Yes — use Min length to drop short words, Max words to limit how many appear, and Min/Max font to control the size range. Word size always scales with how often that word appears in your text.

Can I use my own color for the word cloud?

Yes — pick Custom under Colors and choose any base color; the tool builds a matching tonal palette from it automatically.

Can I download the word cloud with a transparent background?

Yes — set Background to Transparent and the downloaded PNG will have no background fill, ready to drop onto a slide or design.

What image size / resolution do I get?

Pick a Download quality: Standard (2×) and High (4×) scale your chosen canvas size up, while Ultra automatically renders at true 8K resolution (around 7680px on the longer edge) regardless of which canvas size you picked — great for large prints and posters.

Can I download a vector (SVG) version instead of PNG?

Yes — click SVG to download a fully vector, infinitely scalable file (most free word cloud tools only offer PNG). It's ideal for editing in Illustrator, Figma or Inkscape, or printing at any size without losing quality. Note it uses your system fonts unless you swap the font-family in the SVG file.

What does the Animate button do?

Animate previews the cloud building up on-screen, word by word starting with the biggest/most frequent — it doesn't change the final image; PNG/SVG downloads always export the complete cloud. To save that reveal as a file you can share, click GIF instead — it encodes the same animation and downloads it as an animated word-cloud-animation.gif.

Can I download the word-by-word animation as a GIF?

Yes — click GIF (next to Animate) to encode the reveal and download it as an animated word-cloud-animation.gif, ready to share or drop into a slide, chat or social post. It's built and quantized entirely in your browser — no upload, no server.

If I paste the same word many times, does it show up more than once?

Only in Include All Words mode — there, each occurrence gets its own place in the cloud (up to 10 copies per word, tapering slightly in size), so a name or word repeated several times visibly fills the canvas. In Exclude Common Words mode (the default), every word — repeated or not — shows once, sized by how often it occurs, which is the standard word-cloud look.

What can I use a word cloud for?

Common uses include presentation slides, classroom posters, resumes and cover letters, social media graphics, visualizing survey or customer-feedback text, brainstorming sessions, and spotting the most-used keywords in an article for SEO.
